Prescription medication, for most doctors, is the go-to treatment and surgery is the backup plan when the meds don’t seem to work much. Now for migraine patients they will be prescribed a series of blood pressure meds which were never designed for migraine therapy on a long term basis. Most likely, the meds will be Triptans or Ergots which will constrict the blood vessels and can cause a number of side effects such as: liver dysfunction, kidney issues, tightness in chest, heart attack, stroke or even death in some rare cases. This is why extreme caution must be taken and if any of the warning signs of the side effects begin to show up, you should contact your primary care physician immediately and cease from taking the medication until further instructed by your physician. Now I am not saying that all medication is bad or never helpful but for drugs not designed to aid the condition at hand, you should not use these drugs on a long term basis.
A Stage Of Migraine
Migraine headaches take place within four distinct stages that have their own symptoms and issues for the sufferers to deal with. The stages appear in the order of: Prodrome, Aura, Headache and Postdrome. Though these are the stages, not everyone experiences all of the stages or all that each stage is capable of bringing into their life in regards to symptom drama. Here is some info about the Postdrome Stage, the final stage of the migraine process. The Postdrome stage occurs after the pain from the headache stage has subsided; yet this is where most migraine sufferers think the migraine process is over where as I stated it is not. Suring the Postdrome phase, the victim will fell almost hung-over as if they were out all night drinking. The symptoms felt in this stage are: anxiety, depression, fatigue, nausea, vomiting and some dizziness as well.
Risk Factors To Consider
As the migraine begins to formulate the body begins to react. The body reaction to a developing migraine differs between migraine patients but they all end with the same conclusion – intense head pain. So to help out the worrying migraine sufferer, I am going to list several risk factors for migraine headaches. If you check more than two risk factors off than you might want to be proactive and speak with your medical professional as soon as possible.
- Gender – out of the millions of people that suffer with migraines 18% of the migraine sufferers are women. This statistic is not limited to the United States only but relevant to women across the globe. During childhood or adolescents, the frequencies of migraines between sexes were not that different but a drastic increase in migraine headaches in females become apparent as they neared puberty. The reason being that as a female enters puberty her hormone levels especially her estrogen levels. It is common for women to complain of migraines during her monthly menstrual, these headaches are often referred to as menstrual migraines.
- Age – one’s age can be a risk factor, if you are between the ages of 15 and 55 you are still in an age group where migraine headaches can be common occurrences. During childhood, migraines are less frequent but not nonexistent. Research has shown that children who suffer from migraines typically will grow out of them as they age, unless other factors are involved.
- Family Genetics – a rather large statistic says that those individuals that come from a family history of migraine sufferers will most likely be at risk of suffering from chronic migraines as well.
- Medical Concerns – men and women that have a history of medical concerns such as depression, anxiety, stroke, epilepsy and high blood pressure are more susceptible to migraines than people who have not suffered with any of the listed medical concerns.
Magnesium Citrate
Migraine sufferers usually have a lower level of magnesium when compared to those who do not have migraines. Studies have shown that the supplemental dosages of magnesium can help with the painful symptoms of migraines, especially those that might be triggered by the hormonal onset of a monthly cycle in women, because magnesium is protective to the vascular system
Vitamin B2
Vitamin B2 is an excellent preventative migraine treatment because studies have shown that it can decrease the frequency and severity of a migraine for some patients. When taken in supplemental form it is best to take vitamin B2 with food as it is more easily absorbed into the stomach.
