Migraine headaches are absolutely debilitating and send thousands of individuals to emergency rooms, hospital, and clinics on a daily basis. The physicians, nurses, and EMT’s are trained in the medical world to try and provide the most efficient and fast relief possible to the patient, who in the case of suffering from migraine pain needs immediate relief. In recent years because of research completed in migraine pain and its effects on individual’s specific medications such as Triptans and Ergots were begun to be used for migraine pain.
Triptans & Ergots
Any individual who has been to the ER or Urgent care because of migraine pain has probably discussed the use of Triptans or Ergots with the physician on call. Or if a trip to a neurologist or primary care physician has been warranted because of migraine pain then these two medications were most likely brought up.
- Triptans – this medication works by constricting blood vessels and by upsetting the process which leads to a migraine preventing the blood vessels in the brain from swelling, thus providing migraine pain relief. Triptans are usually only prescribed to moderate or severe migraine sufferers and work best when given very early on during a migraine attack. However the drawback to using Triptans for migraine pain is that it does tend to cause negative side effects such as; Drowsiness, Facial Reddening, Fatigue, Tightening in the Chest, Tightening in the Throat, and Dizziness. Also, because Triptans work to narrow and constrict the blood vessels in the brain for the relief of migraine pain, they are also known to constrict other blood vessels that might already have narrowing issues such as in the coronary arteries.
- Ergots – This is another type of prescription medication that also constricts the blood vessels in order to help relieve migraine pain. The difference in Ergots is that while Triptans tend to constrict mostly the vessels in the brain, Ergots have a tendency to restrict blood vessels over the entire body, which makes them far less safe than the use of Triptans. Other negative side effects of Ergots are that they have been known to cause nausea, vomiting, as well as contractions within the uterus, which for obvious reasons makes them very dangerous for pregnant women.
Of course there are instances where these medications must be used for immediate treatment of a migraine sufferer. However, the pros and cons of these types of medications should be weighed very carefully in order to decide if the use of these medications is best. If a migraine sufferer should decide that the use of Triptans or Ergots is not for them they should understand that there are other options for treatment that are far less harmful to the body while at the same time being very successful in providing migraine pain relief.
