Peppermint is also able to be inhaled or applied to the skin. However, it is much stronger than lavender oil. Less should be used when added to the boiling water. It is also suggested to mix peppermint with carrier oil so it will not irritate the skin.
Basil is commonly thought of as a strong-scented herb that is used as a topping for pizza and pastas. Basil oil is derived from basil plants that can also be very useful for migraine headaches. Basil works like a muscle relaxant, so it is very helpful for the tension and tight muscles.
Other natural treatments
Other home remedies that should help migraine headaches include a DIY scalp massage, flaxseed and buckwheat.
The scalp massage or any massage has been identified as a useful home remedy for headaches. It is suggested to massage the occipital nerve. The occipital nerve is located in the back of the head at the base of the skull. Massaging reflex points on the hands and feet can help with migraine headache pain as well.
Flaxseed is high in omega-3 fatty acids which are said to help provide headache relief. Flaxseed can be used as an oil, ground or whole seeds.
Buckwheat contains a flavonoid known as rutin. Flavonoids are phytochemicals which are also found in plants. These are shown to contain antioxidant properties which are able to counteract damage to cells. It is also thought to help with inflammation, which a common cause of headaches.
