Pregnancy can be a wonderful time in a woman’s life but it does come with its own set of aches and pains. If you are one of the millions of women who also get migraine headaches, you may be pleasantly surprised to see your migraine symptoms lessen during your pregnancy. Estrogen levels change during pregnancy which is the cause behind the change in migraine pattern. However, if your migraines do not seem to get better, then there are things you can do to help you cope with these headaches during pregnancy.
MIGRAINE DIARY
One way to help yourself is to keep a diary of your migraines. This way, you will be able to see if certain foods, environmental conditions, beverages, or other things trigger your migraines. There are many things that do trigger migraine headaches such as lack of sleep, stress, and skipped meals. Be sure to write down the date and approximate time-frame (morning, evening) for your migraine along with what you ate for the day. Include anywhere you may have gone and what you did during the day. It seems like a lot to keep up but the benefits pay off. After about a month or so of keeping this diary, you will be able to spot some triggers to your headaches.
PREECLAMPSIA
Another cause of migraine headache during pregnancy is a condition called preeclampsia. Your doctor may want to make a diagnosis for this condition before attributing your symptoms to migraine. Be sure to tell him about any medications you are taking and any supplements.
SELF-CARE OF MIGRAINES
Your first defense against migraine during pregnancy is to live a healthy life-style and do self-care. Here are some tips for helping you control migraines during pregnancy.
• Avoid known triggers, especially certain foods you know that give you headaches.
• Maintain a predictable pattern for meals and snacks.
• Drink plenty of water
• Get plenty of rest
• Think about getting involved in a relaxation or a biofeedback class.
• When you have a migraine headache, try ice packs, massage, and resting in a quiet, dark, room
There are more things you can do to help with migraine and pregnancy but these are a good start. Taking care of yourself during this special time is paramount and the benefits will be less migraines and more enjoyable times for you and your family.
