What can you say about migraine headaches? Migraine headaches are painful, migraines are restrictive and migraines suck the life and productivity right out from underneath a person. When a migraine attacks, it does so with such pain that the migraine patient is often left immobile due to the debilitating symptoms that come with the condition. The symptoms of a migraine all come in stages and when one migraine stage ends a new one begins and the migraine patient is left to wallow in his or her misery until all four migraine stages have been had.
Stage #1 – Prodrome
The prodrome stage is the first migraine stage also known or referred to as the preemptive warning stage. It is during this first migraine stage that migraine treatment is most effective if implemented at the first signs of issues or concerns of an approaching migraine. The symptoms of the prodrome stage are easily missed so it may take a while for the patient to learn them. The following are symptoms of the prodrome stage:
- Extreme Fatigue
- Obsessive Yawning
- Food Cravings
- Extreme irritability
Symptoms of this stage are pain free and often last for one or two days.
Stage #2 – Aura
The aura stage does not affect every migraine patient however those it does affect causes complications with his or her vision. The aura stage produces odd symptoms such as blurred vision, dizziness and black spots behind the eyes. Symptoms of the aura stage often appear several hours before the setting in of the third and most painful of the four migraine stages – the headache stage.
Stage #3 – Headache
The headache stage causes severe head pain that can leave a person struggling to comprehend and perform simple motor skill tasks. The headache stage can last for several days and brings with it symptoms such as: nausea, vomiting, constipation and even diarrhea.
Stage #4 – Postdrome
The fourth and final stage means that the end is in sight and soon life can go back to normal. The Postdrome stage is where the body tries to recoup. This stage might last a mere twenty four hours or forty eight it depends on how long the body rests. Symptoms would include lingering head pain, body aches and mild confusion.
