Lack of sleep can affect every aspect of a person’s life. For new moms, it affects their ability to think clearly and respond lovingly and patiently to their new baby. For migraine sufferers, the lack of sleep can affect the number of migraine attacks they have in a given month. Though migraine causes have yet to be pinpointed, it has been proven that sleep can play a role in the onset of a migraine attack. Sleep is one of the many migraine triggers that can play a role in the onset of a migraine headache. Migraine triggers are factors either physiological and or environmental that can trigger or set the stage for a migraine to develop.
The development of a migraine is as follows. A migraine trigger such as lack of sleep, too much sleep or disturbed sleep is had then the blood vessels in the brain begin to enlarge or expand. The enlarging or expanding of the blood vessels in the brain causes severe throbbing or pounding sensations to develop in the head unilaterally. The enlarged blood vessels begin will release a harmful chemical into the brain that begins to attack the brains arteries. The attacking of the brains arteries releases a series of miserable side effects onto the migraine victim.
Side Effect Dilemma
The side effects that have been released to cause chaos in the life of a migraine victim can force a person into hiding far away from those he or she loves. Migraine symptoms worsen over time and resemble a few of the following if not all of them.
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Blurred Vision
- Black Spots Behind Eyes
- Throbbing / Pounding Head Pain
Side effects such as these are miserable to endure but one of the main issues a migraine causes is insomnia. The intense levels of pain such as the throbbing and pounding head pain prevent a migraine victim from getting much sleep. The lack of sleep prolongs a migraine. Without an effective migraine treatment, the migraine victim will keep having repetitive migraines with very short days of relief in between.
