Being burdened down with a chronic condition such as migraine headaches can take its toll on a person. There is nothing enjoyable about living in and with intense migraine pain. Migraine headaches hinder a person from being able to enjoy life and can often prevent them from performing the simplest of tasks. The limitations that a migraine places on a person is what often drives that individual to the point of needing some kind of intervention or migraine treatment plan. When it comes to a migraine treatment plan there are several treatment options and it is up to the migraine patient to determine which treatment is best suited for him or her.
There are those medical professionals that will strongly encourage the use of medications and by doing so the migraine patient is often bogged down in pills and side effects making him or her feel as though they are suffocating under the weight of all the pills and complications that are often connected with such treatment options.
Prescription Medications And Their Effect
Prescription medication should be one of the last treatments tried in helping relieve migraine headaches; however, until recent years, migraine sufferers had very few options in relieving their migraine pain. New prescription medication called triptans is now available on the market and is geared toward relieving migraine pressure. Triptans have two important abilities:
- They are able to constrict blood vessels.
- They create an upset in the process which leads into a migraine by disturbing the sequence of chemicals that inflict pain or irritation to the nerves.
Triptans
Because of triptans unique ability to attach to the serotonin receptors on the blood vessels and the surrounding nerves, they can help reduce and in some cases completely stop migraine headaches from occurring. The down side to this otherwise amazingly effective medication is the side effect that goes along with its usage.
Though narrowing is part of their job, it can also have a reverse effect by not only narrowing the arteries in the head but also create a narrowing of the arteries in the heart. This becomes increasingly dangerous for those individuals that have already experienced some form of coronary narrowing.
