Migraine pain is a condition that affects millions of individuals worldwide on a regular basis, just in the United States alone it is estimated that more than 28 million Americans suffer from migraine pain. Migraine pain is far worse than the average headache and cannot be treated with just the popping of an aspirin and a little rest or relaxation. Migraine pain can be so intense that it completely debilitates the individual who is suffering from the migraine pain. Medically speaking the definition of migraine pain is described as an intense throbbing or pulsating head pain that normally occurs unilaterally (meaning only on one side of the head), and can be accompanied by many other symptoms beside the head pain. Migraine pain can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days depending on the severity of the migraine pain and other symptoms.
Migraine Pain Causes
The factors that contribute to migraine pain can vary greatly among those who chronically suffer from migraine pain. However, the most common factors that exist for those who experience migraine pain result from certain triggers. Migraine Pain triggers can include a lack of sleep, skipped meals, bright lights or loud noises, stress, anxiety, weather changes, caffeine, alcohol, foods that contain nitrates as well as foods that contain additives (such as nitrates, aspartame, or MSG). • Prodrome – The first stage of migraine pain occurs one to two days before the migraine pain occurs and those who suffer from migraine pain may notice subtle changes that can signify that migraine pain is about to occur. It is important for those who suffer from migraine pain to be able to recognize their triggers and beginning symptoms in order to stop the migraine pain before the attack hits in full force.
• Aura – the second stage of migraine pain is the aura stage. During this stage of migraine pain auras can occur which can be visual, sensory or verbal disturbances. Symptoms can include vision loss, or the sufferer of migraine pain seeing shapes, spots, or flashes of light. Most often the aura stage begins gradually and will last anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes.
• Attack – the third stage of migraine pain is called the attack phase. This is where the most head pain and other symptoms occur. Individuals who suffer from migraine pain on a chronic basis can have several episodes of migraine pain a month which can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days.
• Postdrome – the last stage of migraine pain occurs after a migraine pain episode when the individual feels washed out or drained or can experience extreme fatigue.
It is important for those who suffer from migraine pain to be able to recognize the triggers, symptoms, and different stages of migraine pain so that they can notice an episode of migraine pain coming on before it attacks in full force in order to try and prevent a full fledge migraine pain episode. Other important preventative techniques are important to practice between episodes of migraine pain to help avert future attacks of migraine pain. There are many different options for treating and preventing migraine pain from occurring. The key is to treat the individual symptoms that each person who suffers from migraine pain experiences in order to reduce the severity and frequency of individual episodes of migraine pain.
