A migraine headache can really leave person down and out, hung out to dry. They have the nasty reality of popping up when you least expect it. Migraines cause millions of people each year to suffer from this debilitating illness which is both chronic and consistent. Most individuals can rely on the consistency of their chronic migraine attack by the trigger(s) they encounter that catalyze the migraine illness. Even though most about migraine is unknown, a migraine is divided into four stages: prodrome, aura, headaches / pain and postdrome. Each person experienced each stage differently and may encounter opposite symptoms in each stage or skip a particular stage altogether; unfortunately, most don’t skip the head pain stage. Here is a brief explanation of each stage.
Prodrome
The prodrome is the first stage of the migraine process and can occur hours or even days before the head pain stage. It is characterized mainly by the symptoms you can experience in this stage such as: odd food cravings, altered mood, fatigue, mild dizziness, depression, yawning / more than normal sleepiness and even hot ears. The prodrome phase tends to occur in about half of the migraine sufferers.
Aura
In this stage, the vision and tactile sensitivity of the individual is greatly affected. Some people have report zig-zag vision, blotches and even temporary blindness in one eye which can really freak you out. Hallucinations and gastro-intestinal issue are common as well. So, even though the symptoms in this stage are rough, the least percent of migraine sufferers are affected by this stage.
Headache / Pain
This stage is pretty self-explanatory, yet it important to explain why. The pain experienced comes from two things. First of which is from the chemical that attacks the arteries in the brain. The chemical was released by the expanding blood vessels which catalyze the entire migraine process. The second source of pain comes from the trigeminal nerve which becomes inflamed.
Postdrome
After the main pain has passed, the sufferer will experience a fatigued, worn-out feeling – almost like you are “hung-over.” Cognitive frustration, nausea, constipation are also plausible symptoms in this stage of the migraine process. Only a migraine treatment can bring relief
