There are four specific stages of a migraine which have many different symptoms and not everyone experiences them the same way. Some go from zero to head pain to having to be blind in one eye during the aura stage of the migraine attack. Below we will discuss the different stages and how they can affect you.
Prodrome Stage
This is the first stage is a migraine headache and about fifty percent of the sufferers do experience this stage and many of its uncomfortable symptoms. This stage takes place days or hours before the headache stage. You can and will experience many of the following symptoms: hot ears, irritability, mood swings, certain food cravings like chocolate or pickles, stress, constipation, diarrhea, depression, dizziness, irregular urination patterns and even fatigue or more than normal sleepiness. Some herbal supplements can help with this stage. Valerian can be used as a sedative / sleep aid; it also has some mood calming properties and aids in easing indigestion / abdominal cramps.
Aura Stage
This stage is only experienced by 25% of the migraine population and occurs hours or minutes before the head pain stage. The aura messes with your eyes and balance a great deal. Many people who go through this stage have reported getting: vertigo, blurred vision, zigzag vision, hallucinations and even blindness in one eye. A herbal supplement that can help with vertigo and mental focus is Ginkgo Biloba. Ginkgo has been used for years to improve concentration and visual acuity.
Headache Stage
Pain, pain and more pain will be experience during this stage and it is the most commonly felt and known stage of the migraine process. The pain is unlike a normal headache; this pain is throbbing and unilateral in nature and it cannot be quenched once you are experiencing it. Another herb that can prevent such overwhelming pain or at least minimize its intensity is Butterbur. Butterbur is a plant that is used as a pain reliever and can lessen inflammation in most cases as well.
Postdrome Stage
In this last and final stage of the migraine chain reaction, you will feel almost as if you had been partying all night and have a bit of a hang-over. You will have some of these symptoms: nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, sore / stiff muscles and joints and even have some cognitive difficulties. A natural vitamin can help with the fatigue in this stage. Riboflavin or Vitamin B2 is a key component in the building and maintaining of energy throughout the body. Make this vitamin apart of you daily diet.
