Not every intense pain felt in the head is migraine related. It is important to know the differences between a migraine headache and the pain that stems from a normal or tension related headache. Those who are new to head pain may be wondering if the symptoms they are experiencing are indeed due to a migraine or just a random headache. There are several symptoms that separate a migraine headache from an ordinary headache.
Headache Symptoms
- Headache pain come on quickly and with little to no warning
- Headaches are often described as a pulsating sensation or pain in the head
- Pain relief is easily found with the use of over the counter medicines such as Tylenol, Advil or Motrin
- Normal headaches only last a few hours and then are gone
- Headaches do not accompany symptoms other than head pain and or neck / back pain

- Migraine headaches creep on slowly
- Migraine headaches takes several days to fully manifest

- Migraines are often described as a throbbing / pounding feeling
- Migraine headaches can not be pacified by simple over the counter medications
- Migraine headaches worsen over time and can last up to seventy two hours
- Symptoms of migraines worsen of develop as the migraine progresses. Migraine symptoms include the following:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Dizziness
- Blurred Vision
- Black Spots Behind Eyes
- Sensitivity to light and sound
Those that have little to no experience with migraines often find themselves misdiagnosing their headache. It is important that medical counsel is sought to help better diagnosis the condition to determine whether or not the head pain being felt is due to migraines, tension headaches or some other condition. When it comes to neurological concerns such as migraines or chronic headaches, it is better to err on the side of caution and seek professional help.
Diagnosing a migraine is often done through a simple headache history form, migraine journal and or symptom description. Once the history, journal and symptoms have been discussed thoroughly, they are then able to discuss a migraine treatment plan.
