You may be one of those individuals that prefer medications to treat pain. There is a philosophy that believes “that if there is something out there to help relieve the pain why suffer?”; though this philosophy exists that does not mean that it is a good philosophy to live with. Numbing pain does not fix the problem it only temporarily relieves it; medications lower pain tolerance and could have a lifelong consequence if taken for an extended period of time.
Medications do have a place in the medical world, however they are not the only treatment options out there and for those suffering with chronic migraine headaches prescription medications should be a last result after every other treatment option has been exhausted. Some migraine sufferers have this notion that prescription medications are a cure for their migraine pain when in fact prescription medications only purpose is to relieve symptoms and lessen migraine attacks – there is no known migraine cure.
Prescription medications are often prescribed to chronic migraine sufferers as a way to hopefully lessen the number of migraine attacks the individual sees in a given month or to decrease the severity of the migraine headache. Prescriptions that a medical professional could possible prescribe for the treating of migraines would include:
- Antidepressants
- Blood Pressure Pills
- Antiseizure Medicines
- Triptans
- Beta Blockers
- Ergots
The Ugly Side Of Medications
Prescription medications might seem like a quick fix and an easy solution for those suffering with intense and chronic migraine pain, however the side effects associates with their use is often a good reason as to why one should avoid them. Side effects associated with prescription medications often include: depression, anxiety, mood swings, suicidal tendencies and much more. Take triptans for example, if carefully analyzed the migraine patient would quickly discover that the side effects associated with this medication would include heart attack, stroke and kidney failure.
It is always important to carefully study each of the medications being considered for migraine treatment. In order for the medication to be successful, it must be used as directed and under the care and supervision of a medical professional.
