When migraine symptoms leave you begging for mercy, could the answer be as simple as a switch or click of a button? In today’s society when everything is digital – TV, computer, smart phones, and the list goes one – how much time away from the screen do our eyes actually get? Probably less than you think. Work requirements, emails, catching up with friends and family, video chats, text messaging, even shopping all require the use of a computer or phone screen. This essential technology in our lives, could be the culprit behind our most uncomfortable aches and pains, migraine headaches.
Making a Change
The brain is very sensitive, and the eyes, when straining to take in information start the chain for stress that could be triggering your migraine. Once the eyes begin to cloud and tension pulls, the brain works to protect them and begins constricting the muscles around the brain leading to a throbbing and uncomfortable experience. One factor that may be contributing to those headaches is the glare from your computer or other digital device. Try applying an anti-glare screen protector in order to reduce the glare and the strain on the eyes needed to clearly see the information you are after. In addition, you may want to adjust the brightness and contrast on your screen to a level that is not too harsh for your eyes.
When it comes to hand-held devices, always keep them 12-18 inches from your face. The closer the screen is to your eyes, the worse the strain. These devices have the same capabilities to make adjustments to color and contrast, as desktop monitors do. Finally, take a break and find a change of scenery. When it comes to work, you can’t always just run off and relax the afternoon away, but do allow yourself some time to take your eyes away from the computer screen and decompress. This will allow any muscle strain to find relief, before you have to step back in front of the computer screen to complete your tasks. As for your personal devices, if you already feel a migraine is brewing, leave your texting or gaming for later and just leave the eyes at peace for the time being.
