Migraine headaches can be a condition that people struggle with daily, weekly, monthly or even just a few times a year. Ever person experiences migraine headaches differently. Some are able to take over-the-counter medications and go on about their day. Others suffer from debilitating migraine headaches that put them in bed in the dark for days at a time.
Since every migraine headache is different, every migraine headache can have different symptoms.
Symptoms prior to migraine headaches
Some migraine headache sufferers get symptoms a day or two before it even starts. They may become very sleepy, restless, nervous, cranky, very happy, very awake, lack of appetite even though seemingly thirsty or hungry. The important thing to remember is that every body is different and prepares and reacts differently to what is going on in the brain.
Sometimes migraine headache sufferers have migraine headaches that are preceded by an aura. Auras typically occur about 30 minutes prior to the onset of the migraine headache. Some have a pins-and-needles feeling in their hands, arms or face, while others see spots, flashing lights or wavy lines.
Symptoms during migraine headaches
Common symptoms during a migraine headache include moderate to excruciating pain that can prevent normal daily activities, throbbing pain on one or both sides of the head, nausea, vomiting, pain behind one eye, light sensitivity, noise sensitivity, smell sensitivity, and pain that intensifies with normal physical activity.
Less common migraine headache symptoms include difficulty speaking, short-term weakness on one side of the body, tingling in the face, arms and shoulders. These symptoms can be serious and should be discussed with the doctor. If the migraine headache is left untreated it can last anywhere from four to 72 hours.
Symptoms after migraine headaches
Following the migraine headache many can have muscle aches and feel excessively tired. Usually these feelings last up to a day following the migraine headache.
Many sufferers find it helpful to keep a journal of their symptoms to discuss with their doctor. In this journal, it is important to keep a full record of what is going on. Migraine headache sufferers should write out their complete list of symptoms even if seemingly unrelated.
