While not all migraine headache treatments can cause side effects, many prescription medications can have adverse side effects. They can cause everything from nausea to chest pain. A common prescription medication for migraine headache sufferers is called Imitrex.
Imitrex is in a drug family of triptans. Triptans cause constriction of blood vessels and interrupts the chain of chemical events that lead to a migraine. Imitrex comes as an injections, nasal spray and tablets. However, the most common is the tablet form, which is what we will be talking about.

Severe side effects of Imitrex
Many times the first dose of Imitrex tablets is given in a hospital or clinic setting to ensure that medical professionals are available if the migraine headache sufferer has a serious reaction to the medication. If a migraine sufferer has a serious side effect occurrence, they will be immediately taken off of the medication and may also need professional medical assistance.
Severe side effects of the Imitrex tablet include:
- Rash
- Hives
- Itching
- Difficulty breathing
- Tightness in the chest
- Swelling of the mouth, face, lips or tongue
- Bloody diarrhea
- Chest pain
- Confusion
- Fainting
- Fast or irregular heartbeat
- Fever
- Hallucinations
- Hearing problems
- Numbness or tingling of an arm or leg
- One-sided weakness
- Pain, tightness or pressure in the jaw, neck, or chest
- Seizures
- Severe headache
- Dizziness
- Vomiting
- Severe or prolonged flushing
- Severe stomach pain
- Shortness of breath
- Speech changes
- Very cold or blue fingers or toes
- Vision changes or loss of vision
- Wheezing.
Imitrex should be taken exactly as prescribed. If any of these symptoms occur, seek medical help as soon as possible as they can become serious or life threatening.
