Believe it or not there is a connection between migraine symptoms and food. It is important that each individual who experiences migraine symptoms become aware of the specific foods or nutrition factors that may trigger migraine symptoms within them. Personal treatment is the key to finding relief from migraine symptoms. However, there has been some research done to indicate the connection between migraine symptoms and certain foods. While it is important to keep a food journal and try to find out what personally sets off migraine symptoms in each person, there is an overall list of foods that should be avoided for those who suffer from migraine symptoms.
Common Food Triggers for Migraine Symptoms
A few of the common foods, beverages, or additives that are commonly associated with migraine symptoms are listed below:
- Aged Cheeses – are known to be migraine symptoms triggers because they are high in a substance called Tyramine. The longer a food ages the greater quantity of Tyramine is in the product. Certain cheeses such as blue cheeses, Brie, Cheddar, Stilton, Feta, Gorgonzola, Mozzarella, Muenster, Parmesan, Swiss, as well as processed cheeses are by a general rule suggested to be avoided for those who suffer from migraine symptoms.
- Additives – Certain additives, especially those containing Nitrates, Sulphates, as well as Tyramine (as listed above) are suggested to be avoided by those suffering from migraine symptoms. Aspartame and other artificial sweeteners are another “no-no” for individuals who suffer from migraine symptoms. Those foods are: pizza, potato chip products, peanuts (nuts, or peanut butter), chicken livers or other organ meats, dried fruits, soups that are made from meat extracts or bouillon.
