Maxalt-MLT is an acute migraine medication. This means that the medication is designed to be taken at the onset of a migraine headache or when symptoms are first experienced. It will not prevent a migraine headache, but will lessen the debilitating pain and discomfort of a migraine headache. Maxalt-MLT is designed to be dissolved on the tongue because it is an orally disintegrating tablet. They come in a blister pack and need to be carefully removed because the tablet needs to stay in one piece.
Common side effects of Maxalt-MLT
Common side effects should go away once the body adjusts to the medication. These side effects should not be persistent or bothersome.
Common side effects include:
- dizziness
- drowsiness
- dry mouth
- fatigue
- nausea
- weakness
Severe side effects of Maxalt-MLT
Severe side effects can be life threatening. Please seek medical attention if any of these severe side effects are experienced. Sometimes doctors will give the patient Maxalt-MLT in a hospital or clinic setting in case of serious side effects occurring.
Severe side effects include:
- rash
- hives
- itching
- difficulty breathing
- tightness in the chest
- swelling of the mouth, face, lips or tongue
- unusual hoarseness
- bloody diarrhea
- burning, numbness or tingling of the hands or feet
- chest heaviness
- chest, neck or jaw pain, tightness or pressure
- decreased coordination
- excessive sweating
- fainting
- fast, slow or irregular heartbeat
- fever
- hallucinations
- mental or mood changes
- muscle spasms
- seizure
- severe nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
- severe or persistent headache or dizziness
- shortness of breath
- stomach pain
- symptoms of stroke (confusion, one-sided weakness, slurred speech)
- tremors
- unusual weakness
- very cold or blue fingers or toes
- vision changes or loss of vision
Maxalt-MLT should be taken exactly as prescribed. Follow the label on the prescription exactly. It should not be taken with tension headaches, or any headaches that are different from the patient’s common migraine headaches. Keep in mind that overuse of an acute migraine medication can make migraine headaches worse.
