When taking over-the-counter medicine doesn’t help and someone would prefer a more natural remedy to their migraine headache, magnesium is a supplement that is widely suggested.
Magnesium, an alkaline metal, acts as a calcium blocker. Calcium stimulates muscle contraction while magnesium relaxes the muscle. While both calcium and magnesium supplements are available and suggested, taking a blend is said to be ineffective. Rather, it is suggested that both supplements are necessary but should be taken separately and at different times of the day.
While taking magnesium helps, it is unlikely that many migraine suffers struggle with a magnesium deficiency; but instead, have dips in their magnesium levels because of a poor diet or medications in their system. - Whole grains
- Wheat germ
- Bananas*
- Milk
- Dark green leafy vegetables
*As a warning, bananas are a common trigger for many migraine sufferers.
Another way to help raise magnesium levels is to take supplements. A normal adult needs between 310mg and 420 mg of magnesium. A supplement can provide the difference between the amount of magnesium a person takes in their diet and the amount that is actually needed. Some doctors will provide magnesium injections to help raise a patient’s magnesium level quickly and effectively. Doctors can also do an IV infusion of magnesium.
There is a happy medium with magnesium, and when taking supplements as a natural remedy to alleviate a migraine headache; the advice of a health care professional would be wise information to obtain.
Magnesium treatment should be taken a minimum of 60 to 90 days to see if the migraine symptoms improve. Certain types of magnesium are absorbed by the body better. It is suggested to look for magnesium supplements that end in “ate.” For example, magnesium glycinate and magnesium gluconate are two suggested types of magnesium.
Please keep in mind that even though magnesium is a natural remedy this does not mean it poses no risk to the body. Taking too much of any one supplement can cause side effects. The best way to boost a specific mineral or vitamin is to take it in naturally through food and allowing the body to absorb it during digestion.
