Acupuncture is an ancient medicine practiced for thousands of years in the Eastern cultures. Since its adoption in the Western culture, several studies have been done to ascertain whether this treatment is beneficial to pain control and disease. The early studies were inconclusive but recently, a very complete, detailed, and rigorous study has been conducted to see what benefits acupuncture has on migraine headache, chronic pain, and arthritis sufferers. The latest study underscores other scientific results that acupuncture is extremely beneficial to pain relief. The new research was a detailed analysis of earlier research that involved data from nearly 18,000 participants.
The researchers reported that acupuncture performed better than sham treatments and standard care treatments for patients with migraine headache as well as other chronic pain patients. It is an effective treatment for pain and therefore a reasonable referral option. The significant difference between true and sham acupuncture suggest that acupuncture is more than a placebo. There was a lot of controversy over this treatment for a long time but with this new research, the results point to acupuncture as an effective treatment options for chronic pain like migraine.
HOW ACUPUNCTURE WORKS
For those not familiar with this treatment, acupuncturists use small, sterilized needles inserted at various places on the body to stimulate acupoints, which produce a variety of results. It is one of the most widely used alternative treatments in the United States and is becoming more and more available in many hospitals today. Although widely practiced, this treatment is still looked on by many doctors and people, in general, as not being really effective. For me, I feel you have to try it before making any judgment. If it works, great! Use it! If not, try other treatments until you find one that works for you. After all, not every treatment works for everybody.
In the recent study, data from previous studies was re-analyzed and the results showed more reliable conclusions about the effectiveness of acupuncture with migraine headache and other chronic conditions. Obviously, acupuncture would be a great treatment option. It is more reasonable than some other treatments and has no side effects. Migraine sufferers should consider this treatment when discussing treatment options with their doctor.
